Every roofer wants to show up for their town, and for the six towns around it. The standard advice is to make a page for each one. The standard result is forty pages that are the same page with the name swapped, which does nothing and can actively hurt.
Area pages do work. They just have to be pages rather than copies.
Why the copy-paste version fails
Search engines have been dealing with this exact trick for twenty years, and a set of near-identical pages is the easiest pattern in the world to spot. At best only one of them ranks. At worst the whole set is treated as thin, and the pages you did write properly get dragged down with it.
There is a second cost, and it is the one that shows up in your phone log. A homeowner who lands on a page that is obviously generated learns something about how you work before they have read a word about roofs.
