Plenty of good roofing companies have never had a website and have never been short of work. If that is you, the honest answer to whether you need one is: not for the reason you are usually given.
You do not need a website to find customers. Word of mouth is already doing that, and it is the best lead source there is. What a website does is finish the job word of mouth started, and that is a much smaller claim, which is why it is worth taking seriously.
What actually happens after a referral
Your customer tells their neighbour you did a good job. The neighbour does not ring you. They look you up first, usually on a phone, usually the same evening. That gap between the recommendation and the call is the only thing a website has to survive.
Three things can happen in that gap:
- They find a good listing and a site that matches what they were told. They ring, already half sold.
- They find nothing at all. Some ring anyway. Some quietly decide you are a bit informal for a job this size, and ring the roofer whose van they saw.
- They find something wrong. An old address, a dead number, a page that has not been touched since 2019. That is worse than nothing, because it looks like a business winding down.
Nobody in situation two or three will ever tell you what happened. That is what makes this hard to notice: the cost of having no website is invisible by design.
The three jobs a site does for a referred customer
A referred customer is not shopping. They have already been told to use you. So the site is not there to persuade them, it is there to remove doubt, and it only needs to do three things:
- Prove you are real and still trading. Recent job photos do this better than any words.
